Protecting Your Family Photos
Introduction
Step 1: Visual Inspection of your photos
Step 2a: Scan photographs or send them out to companies to do it for you
Step 2b: Color correcting and repairing your photos
Physically repairing your damaged photographs is a costly ___. Photograph conservators oftentimes can only stabilize a damaged photograph or reattach separated pieces. The best solution is to have the image digitally repaired instead.
Companies can even color-correct photographs that have yellowed or reddened over the years. Colored photographs are more prone to composition changes than b&w photographs.
Step 3: Remove your photos from sticky albums
Step 4: Place photos in archival boxes
Step 5: Keep newspaper clippings away from photographs
Step 6: Consider separating colored photos from B&W photographs
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
